A: The best time to neuter (spay) a female dog is at 6 months of age, before the first heat. This is not only because younger dogs recover much faster from the surgery but because early neutering can reduce the incidence of mammary canter to 0.5%!

A: Kittens need a course of 2 vaccines 3 weeks apart, the first one at 9 weeks and the second at 12 weeks. We recommend vaccinations against cat flu , enteritis and feline leukaemia.

A: Puppies need a course of 2 to 3 vaccines depending on their age. Often breeders will get a vaccine at 6 weeks of age. When you get your new pup home, we recommend vaccines at 8 weeks and the second at 11 weeks. Older pups need a course of 2 vaccines two weeks apart.

Q: We just got a new baby rabbit- what vaccinations do they need?

A: There is a combined vaccine against myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). Both of these rabbit diseases are very common in Ireland and are usually fatal. The vaccine can be given from 5 weeks of age. Then they need annual boosters.

Q: I want to travel with my pet. What do I need?

A: You will need to get a Pet Passport. This process can take up to 8 months to have all paperwork in order and you should consider this when making your travel plans. It is best to contact the department of Agriculture in Ireland and in the country of destination in order to get a list of all requirements as it is different in many countries.

Q: How often do I need to worm my pet?

A: Puppies and kittens can be dewormed from two weeks of age. We recommend worming every 2 weeks until they are 12 weeks of age. Then they can be given a tablet wormer every 3 months. We advise adult dogs and cats be dewormed every 3 months. In the case of pregnant dogs and cats, deworming should be done 3 weeks before and again 3 weeks after giving birth.
